The Expert and I

Welcome to The Expert and I—a heartfelt collaboration between a wise octogenarian and me, his daughter. Here, my father draws on his decades-long experience in career and life counseling to share stories, insights, and lessons learned from guiding others through life’s pivotal moments. As a product of his teachings, I humbly offer commentary, as daughters often do, on how his advice resonates in today’s world.

Whether you’re seeking guidance, inspiration, or simply a good story, join us as we bridge generations. Here, the past informs the present, and together, we chart a path forward.

About the author

Ron Clinton, BA, MS, CAGS in guidance and psychological services

I have taken a journey along the scenic—and sometimes bumpy—road of self-discovery. My first jobs were hands-on: working in a factory, driving a delivery truck, and pumping gas at a local station. Those early days taught me a lot about hard work, but also left me searching for direction. Whenever I met someone new, I’d always ask about their journey, hoping it might shine a light on my own path forward.

With no clear plan, I made a leap and joined the US Air Force. The military gave me structure, discipline, and sent me on an adventure—from technical school in communications intelligence to international assignments in Turkey. I met people from all over the world, and learned that, while we share many similarities, our unique experiences and choices shape who we are.

This curiosity about people and what drives them led me to study sociology at University. Fascinated by research and guidance, I earned a fellowship for my master’s in educational research, statistics, and psychological testing, then completed a 6th year degree in guidance and psychological services. Along the way, I became trained in assessment tools like the California Values Survey, Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator—all with one goal in mind: to help people understand themselves and each other.

Embracing opportunities—sometimes stumbling, always learning—I found my calling as a counselor within the Community College system. For the next 40 years, I had the privilege of advising and guiding students from every background imaginable. Time and again, I met individuals who, just like me, were unsure of their next step. I couldn’t tell them what to do, but I guided them in finding those answers within themselves.

Through decades of working closely with people, I developed a system of self-exploration and observation, designed to help others uncover not just a career path, but a more meaningful and fulfilled life. Seeing others find happiness, success, and fulfillment is one of my greatest rewards. If I can lend support on your journey—even a small part—I consider it an honor.
